What Is Fairycore?

Fairycore is the internet aesthetic growing right alongside cottagecore, goblincore, and whimsigoth. As the name suggests, it's all about fairies, specifically the good fairies you see on TV and in art. If I had to sum up what Fairycore is about in two words, it’d be whimsy and nature.

Before I go further, I want to state that this is my take on fairycore, with the basic understanding being the same but with some more in-depth input from me.

Fairycore vs Cottagecore

Fairycore and cottagecore share a lot of DNA. For example, there's an overlap in hobbies like gardening, foraging, and flower pressing that fit both worlds. But mainly, both lean into romance and nature, and both are an escape from modern city life.

But they're chasing different feelings.

Cottagecore is about slow, cozy living in the quiet countryside. Fairycore is about whimsy and the ethereal. Fairies aren't of this reality, so the whole aesthetic feels a little more otherworldly than cottagecore's grounded farmhouse energy.

A Little History

Fairycore's visual roots trace back to the Victorian era, when there was a full rebirth of interest in fairy culture. You can see it all over the paintings from that period. The fairy image that we’re used to today is tiny and winged, a fairly recent addition to the mythology. Wings are common in Victorian and later fairy art, but they're actually rare in older folklore, where fairies got around by magic instead. That Victorian reimagining is basically the blueprint fairycore still draws from. Wikipedia

Important distinction: this is Fairy, not Fae. The aesthetic pulls from the lighter, more whimsical fairy imagery, not the darker versions you'd find in Celtic folklore.

The Feeling

Ethereal. Whimsical. Nature.

If you're building a fairycore mood board, those three words are your north star.

Popular Motifs

  • Fairies

  • Pointed stars

  • Mushrooms

  • Butterflies

  • Moss

  • Flowers

You see some repeated motifs from other aesthetics, like cottagecore with mushrooms and goblincore with moss. Likely due to the fact that all these aesthetics share a strong relationship to nature.ai generated fairycore living room and bedroom*AI-generated image for illustrative purposes only.

If I had to recommend an architecture style that goes well with fairycore, it would be Art Nouveau. The style emphasizes the geometry you find in nature. Think organic lines, spirals, flower stems, and vines, and that's exactly what Art Nouveau is all about. A perfect fit for fairycore, or at least a great inspiration to draw from.

The goal is to bring nature indoors, especially moss, somewhere fairies would live if they were human-sized, similar to the miniature fairy gardens you see in people's gardens.

To bring nature indoors, let in as much natural light as you can. Not just regular lamps or string lights, but crystals to bounce that light around and stained glass for extra color and sparkle.

For fabrics, this is your chance to lean all the way into the ethereal side of fairies. Sheer curtains and anything shimmering earn their keep here. I've seen beaded curtains, and I think that's a nice touch, especially if you use crystal beads or thin green fabric to replicate vines.

Wooden furniture works best to represent the trees and forest, though it's tougher to find than modern styles and will usually cost more than buying furniture from IKEA. Artisan, ornate pieces like Art Nouveau furniture take that extra level into fairycore, and they're worth seeking out.

Fairycore Fashion

Take direct inspiration from current fairy art. Tiered layered skirts, spiral ruffle dresses, green beaded tops, floral patterns, ribbons, iridescent fabric, lace, loose flowy garments, ornate corsets.

Pastels work beautifully for fairycore since they invoke that airy feeling the whole aesthetic is built on. It really comes down to chasing a whimsical, ethereal mood, and flowy clothing does a lot of that heavy lifting on its own.

Makeup & Accessories

There has been a lot of fairy-inspired makeup designs these last couple of years. For example, Butterfly wings traced around the eyes. Shimmer and highlighter are placed to catch the light and make you look more ethereal, just like the way fairies are always described.

Nails have gotten even more elaborate in the last couple of years too. You see more intricate vine and floral designs that I think go perfectly with the fairycore aesthetic.

Even with hair, there are more accessories out there to add whimsy, like hair jewelry beads. Adding tinsel into hair gives it a nice, fun, colorful shine too.

Using makeup and accessories is an easy stepping stone into adding Fairycore to your everyday life.

Fairycore in Media

Nowadays, when people think of fairies, they will most likely think of Tinkerbell and the Winx Club fairies. Back in the 2000s, fairy artists like Amy Brown and Selina Fenech were everywhere too, and their work still circulates today.

And of course, I have to give a shoutout to Neopet faeries. I loved them back in the early 2000s. Each one had their own domain, from Dark Faerie to even a Soup Faerie, and it was fun seeing how their designs were styled around that theme.

Final Thoughts

Fairycore is just another great style to add under the various nature-based aesthetics umbrella. We live in a time of wardrobe basics, minimalist home decor, endless cityscapes, and work culture that leaves little room for whimsy. Fairycore pushes back on all of that. It adds magic and romantic escapism to your everyday life. One day, I'd love to see the world embrace more art and whimsy. Intricate, ornate buildings. Flower field gardens. Colorful, detailed, and diverse outfits. Anything but the same monotone blueprints we keep building society around.
