What is Fairycore?

Looking to add a little magic and whimsy to your home? If cottagecore resonates with you, you might love Fairycore, also known as Faecore.

As the name suggests, Fairycore is tied to the world of fairies and the feelings they evoke. Specifically drawn from European Fae folklore, where fairies are seen as nature spirits. This aesthetic captures the magical side of nature: a blend of romance, fantasy, and wilderness, like living inside an enchanted forest from your favorite fantasy novel. But fairycore pulls from more than just folklore. It also blends elements of vintage fantasy illustrations, Studio Ghibli-style imagery, and childhood fairytale nostalgia.

Similar styles to explore: Cottagecore, French and British countryside, and coquette.

As you read along, please note this is my personal take on fairycore home design. Feel free to use these suggestions as-is or mix and match to fit your own style!

A good rule of thumb when deciding what to add or take away: Does this evoke the look or feeling of an enchanted forest? Does it have a sense of whimsy?

Color Palettemix of pastels and jewel tone colors for home design

Since fairies are nature spirits, we pull our palette straight from nature: greens, earthy browns, and mossy tones. But because fairies are also ethereal, magical creatures, we balance those earth tones with soft, light colors: lavender, rose, blush, periwinkle, and neutral whites.

Here's a simple framework for building your palette:

  • 1 neutral (main color) — used for big-impact items like furniture and wall colors

  • 1–2 secondary colors — for curtains, rugs, and bedding

  • 1–2 accent colors — for wall decor, vases, and pillows

Anchoring your space with one main neutral keeps things cohesive and prevents it from feeling chaotic, but if you love a maximalist look, like an untamed forest, feel free to throw that rule out the window!

Furniture

comparison visual of ornate and scandi furniture Lean into the earthy, organic nature of the fairy world by choosing wood or natural stone furniture pieces. Stone and wood-imitation materials work great too. Try to avoid steel, plastic, or anything that reads as modern or industrial.

The best furniture fits into one of two camps:

  • Ornate and decorative — think Art Nouveau with its flowing tendrils, or Rococo-style pieces with intricate vine and floral carvings. Handcrafted or vintage furniture with those kinds of details is perfect.

  • Softly organic — for a more subdued fairycore look, Scandinavian or mid-century modern shapes work well. They lean into organic curves and warmth without going full maximalist.

Lighting

Things like stained glass lamps that cast colorful pools of light, lanterns, crystal lamps, and twinkling fairy string lights. Color-changing light bulbs are a great addition too. Candles are always lovely, but if I had to pick the most Fairycore options, twinkling string lights and crystal lamps take the top spot.

Home Decor

This is the fun part! Decor is where you really get to bring the enchanted forest to life. You don't have to add everything here; these are just ideas to pick and choose from.

Vines

One of my favorite versatile pieces. Hang them on walls, drape them over curtains, or wrap them around furniture. Driftwood and twigs are a beautiful addition or alternative.

Flowers

A Fairycore must. Colorful blooms or dried flowers in a vase are lovely, but flower garlands hung from the walls take it to the next level.

Rugs

Go for irregular shapes over standard rectangles. Moss-shaped rugs and organic "blobby" shapes are some of my favorites. I love how these types of rugs make you feel like you’re touching the forest floor or an open flower field.

Moss

Such a versatile decor element and a great way to add texture to your home. Try vintage mirrors upcycled with moss accents around the frame, or moss wall art for a living, textured focal point. Here are some other great moss decor pieces.

Motifs

Try to add visual elements of Fairies, mushrooms, moths, butterflies, gnomes, lily pads, and elements from Fae folklore like the Celtic Green Man. Spiral and tendril-shaped decor fits right in, too.

Curtains

Sheer curtains add romance and softness. Beaded curtains add whimsy and scatter beautiful light throughout the room, like these crystal beaded door curtains or Tassel String Curtains.

Suncatchers

Crystal or stained glass suncatchers let in sunlight and cast gorgeous colored light around your space. Wind chimes are a wonderful pairing as well; they add an auditory layer of magic alongside the visual.

Water Fountain

Not a drinking fountain, but an outdoor water fountain in your garden or small yard. Or a small tabletop one with a nice flowing stream. The sounds are so peaceful, and make you feel like you’re in a forest by a babbling brook.

Fairy Garden

Create a miniature garden outside in your yard, or bring one indoors. You can DIY one or grab a readymade version.

Wreaths

A lovely way to bring in natural elements and rotate seasonally. My go-to is a springtime wreath, but "all-season greenery wreaths" are a great minimal option if you want something year-round.

Fun but Impractical 😄

A Bubble machine, hear me out. Turn it on every once in a while for a little moment of pure whimsy. Or go full chaotic fairy and put it on a timer. Just be mindful of soap residue pooling on your floors if you’re keeping it indoors!

Easy Ways to Add Fairycore Without a Full Commitment

Not ready to go all-in? Here are some simple ways to dip your toes into this aesthetic:

  • Drape decorative vines somewhere in your home.

  • Add fairy lights or soft lighting like suncatchers and lanterns.

  • Incorporate a fairy-themed motif or two.

  • Shift your color palette toward earthy and soft tones.

  • Add fresh or dried flowers.
