If you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, visiting Hobbiton in New Zealand is an absolute dream come true. As a long-time fan of Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Tolkien’s world, I finally had the chance to walk the paths of the Shire myself in late March 2023. And let me just say—it lived up to every expectation. The scale, quality of the sets, and views - I give it a 10/10 must-do attraction when visiting New Zealand.

Whether you’re crafting your New Zealand itinerary or seeking tips to enhance your visit, here’s everything you need to know about Hobbiton.
📍 Where Is Hobbiton & How to Get There
Hobbiton is located in Matamata, approximately two hours south of Auckland. If you're flying internationally, your closest airport is most likely:
Auckland (AKL): ~2 hours away
Tauranga (TRG): ~40 minutes away (closest)

If you're not planning on renting a car, you have two other great options:
Book a full-day tour that includes transport and tickets.
Utilize InterCity buses for extensive travel across New Zealand. I'd recommend this option if you plan to travel to multiple cities in New Zealand. They have customizable travel passes based on your intended hours of travel. Their closest bus stop to Hobbiton is Matamata, and from there, you can book tickets directly, with transportation from Matamata i-site included.
💰 Cost Breakdown & Tour Options
We booked a combo tour from Auckland to Hobbiton Movie Set & Waitomo Glowworm Caves using Chase credit card points through Viator (the provider).
🎟 Cost w/o points: ~ USD 220 per person
💳 Chase Points Used: 31,948 = USD 399.36 total for 2 people
🍽 Included: Entry to both attractions, round-trip transportation, snacks, and a full buffet lunch at the Party Marquee (right next to the Green Dragon Inn!)
Alternatively, you can book the same tour we did directly through Viator: Hobbiton + Waitomo Tour from Auckland. However, Hobbiton Tours also offers a list of third-party tour vendors for those who want more options.
If you don't need transportation or are not booking a multi-attraction day tour, you can purchase tickets directly from the official Hobbiton Tours website. They offer additional tour options, such as a "Behind The Scenes" tour or the chance to enjoy "Second Breakfast." For budget savings, there are ticket options available for just the guided tour, no frills, but you still get to enjoy a complimentary drink at The Green Dragon Inn.
Cost of Hobbiton Movie Set tour starts at: NZD 120* (~ USD 70) for adults. *tickets will increase to NZD 130 after March 2026
✨ What to Expect on the Tour

Once you check in the ticketing office at The Shire’s Rest (with restrooms, a café, and a gift shop), you’ll board a shuttle to the movie set itself. It's just a quick 10-minute ride away. The entire tour is fully guided, featuring insights into behind-the-scenes filming stories, trivia, and design choices.
They do give enough time for photo ops at the Hobbit homes. After visiting all the Hobbit dwellings, including Bag End and Samwise Gamgee's residence, filmed at the end of "The Return of the King," you'll come across the party field where Bilbo celebrated his birthday. From there, you can also visit the watermill and the Green Dragon Inn.

You’ll end the tour at the Green Dragon Inn, where you’re treated to a complimentary drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), and then enjoy a buffet lunch at the Party Marquee, which feels straight out of Bilbo’s birthday celebration. The Party Marquee buffet had vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options.

🌿 Highlights & Favorite Moments

Walking through Bagshot Row and seeing Bag End up close
A big souvenir shop that includes works done by Weta Workshop, which designed and created weapons, costumes, and sets for the movies. I got a replica of the One Ring there!
The lush rolling hills, Sackville apple orchards, and roaming sheep 🐏
The Green Dragon Inn has exclusive drinks brewed just for Hobbiton visitors. I tried the Sackville Apple Cider—delicious! My husband had the non-alcoholic Frogmorton Ginger Beer. You can also buy these at the Gift shop.

🎒 What to Bring
Valid ID (especially if you plan to have a drink – I brought my passport)
Comfortable walking shoes
A light waterproof jacket - we went during the fall season, so there were light showers early in the morning on the drive there.
Your camera (or phone) for photo ops galore
An optional small backpack for souvenirs and snacks
🌌 Bonus Stop: Waitomo Glowworm Caves
After Hobbiton, our tour continued to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a relaxing and awe-inspiring experience to close out the day before our ~2-hour drive back to Auckland. Floating beneath a ceiling of glowing worms felt like stargazing underground—completely worth it. Just make sure your phone's flash is turned off before taking pictures.
Summary:

Hobbiton was easily one of the most idyllic places I’ve ever visited. It’s peaceful, magical, and picture-perfect. This is a must-do activity, whether or not you're a Lord of the Rings fan or a cottage core lover; this is a one-of-a-kind, unique experience you don't want to miss when touring New Zealand.
